Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry
The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry (FH) (French Fédération de l'Industrie Horlogère Suisse) is the umbrella organization of the Swiss watch industry. It traces its history to the 1924 formation of the Fédération Horlogère Suisse but was re-formed and expanded in 1982 to include the former Swiss Watch Chamber.
Fédération Horlogère Suisse
The Fédération Horlogère Suisse was founded on January 17, 1924 as a result of over-production of watches after World War I. The Union of Watch Material Associations (UBAH), created in 1927, was a similar organization of component suppliers. Membership in the FH included the new Ebauches SA (formed in 1925) and ASUAG (formed in 1931), as well as numerous other watch companies. The organization was variously called “Fédération Horlogère Suisse”, “Fédération Horlogère”, and “The Swiss Federation of Associated Watch Makers”.
The organization was headquartered at Bienne. By 1960, the FH represented 550 manufacturers in six regional sections Geneva, Vaud, Fleurier, Le Locle, La Chaux-de-Fonds, and Berne. The FH was also organized according to production type “Assemblers” used components from other companies while “complete manufacturers” produced their own ebauches and most other watch components.
Producers of cheap Roskopf watches were not part of the FH and instead joined the Roskopf Association, later known as Ecoswiss.
Fédération de l'Industrie Horlogère Suisse
The organization was re-formed in 1982 following a general assembly. The new FH included the previous Fédération Horlogère Suisse and also incorporated the previous Swiss Watch Chamber. Membership included ASUAG, Ecoswiss, UBAH, and APIC.
Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève
Since 2000 the association awards the prestigious Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève.
