Mido

Mido is a Swiss watch brand, currently part of the Swatch Group's Middle Range.

The Swiss watch manufacturer Mido was founded 1918 by Georges Schaeren and has now its headquarters in Le Locle, in the heart of the Swiss Jura. The name Mido comes from the Spanish “Yo mido” (I measure), as a synonym for technical innovation and timeless design. In 1940 the company started to specialize in waterproof watches. In 1944 watches with automatic winding were produced.

An important milestone in the history of Mido was the launch of the “Multifort” in 1934. This was the first watch that united the following four characteristics self-winding movement, anti-magnetic, shockproof and waterproof. The Multifort was a great seller from 1930 to 1950.

1959 with the Mido Ocean Star the revolutionary monoshell case was introduced, by which the current problems of water resistance with casebacks could be eliminated. The combination of this technology with the crown sealing system Aquadura guaranteed the water resistance of the watch also under the most adverse conditions. This concept is therefore still used in the collection Commander. Since the launch in 1959, the design of this most famous Mido series remained almost unchanged. It is one of a few real classics of the watch industry and highly esteemed by collectors of nice Swiss watches.

1972 Mido was adopted by the ASUAG, and later by the SMH. Since 1985 Mido is part of the Swatch Group, the world's largest watch company.
