Cimier is a Swiss watch manufacturer.

Foundation

The watchmaker R. Lapanouse founded an own watch company in 1924. This produced so-called Roskopf watches, that were watches with cheap movements (named after Georg Friedrich Roskopf).

The brand name Cimier (French for helmet embellishment) was officially introduced for the first time in 1951. Till 1957 low-cost wristwatches were produced under the name “Lapanouse-Cimier”. Due to the favorable prices, the production number per year were 1 to 1.2 million wristwatches and more than 21 million “Stoppers” (stop function without reset).

During the quartz crisis in the 1970 years, Cimier responded with a very unique strategy if the electronic items from specialized suppliers were additionally purchased and the production of mechanical components in-house was maintained, the mechanics and electronics in the movements could initially been successfully combined. Nevertheless in 1985 the watch production, also because of the unresolved company succession, had to be finished.

Restart in 2003

In 2003, the brand was re-launched by a young team. 2004, eighty years after the company had been founded in the Basel countryside, the new owners Robert Jaeger and Martin Bärtsch presented the collection Cimier 1924, a name that remembers the year the company was founded. All other collections of the brand bear a date that is either important for the history or reflects the zeitgeist at which the design of the collection is oriented.

The company advertises with the slogan “Fascinating times” and in this context works together with known Swiss sports personalities such as from soccer or skiing.
