  *  With the support of the Sandoz Family Foundation the watch [[manufacture]] [[Parmigiani|Parmigiani Fleurier]] is created with a handshake on May 29.
  *  The watch company [[Jacques Etoile]] is founded on 1 October 1996 in Lörrach/Baden/Germany. 
  *  [[Vacheron Constantin]] introduces the [[Vacheron Constantin Overseas|Overseas]] line
  *  [[Vendôme]] acquires [[Vacheron Constantin]] on December 12
  *  [[Schauer, Jörg|Jörg Schauer]] acquires the rights of the watch brand [[Stowa]] and the [[raw movement]] brand [[Durowe]]. 
  *  [[Philippe Dufour]] debuts his first "production" watch (one of only three to date), the [[Philippe Dufour Duality|Duality]], which features dual escapements.
  *  The Designer [[Külling, Ruedi|Ruedi Külling]] and the marketing expert Hanspeter Hanschick found the Swiss watch brand [[Xemex]].
